  • MR and Rabbit 1980 Ripcurl Pro - Peter Crawford Slide Transparencies

MR and Rabbit 1980 Ripcurl Pro - Peter Crawford Slide Transparencies

Rip Curl Bells Beach Pro presentation in 1980.

Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew and I were in the final which I won. There was no priority buoy in those days. Every heat had a lot of intense jockeying and hassling for the inside position. Whoever was on the inside had first choice of wave.

I always liked to try and hold inside position from the start of a heat. To achieve this beach positioning in relation to your opponent on the initial paddle was important. Bugs walked down after me and went straight to my inside standing on the beach.

So I waited until he started to make a move towards entering the water and then I ran around his right hand side so I would have the inside as we paddled out.

Competitive surfing back then tested your surfing ability and heat strategy.

Peter and his Crozier Slab - Peter Crawford Slide Transparencies

Peter crawford PC and his famous crozier Slab knee board design

    Little Avalon New South Wales
    Australia

"PC at Little Avalon in 1978 carrying his board with a leg rope shoulder sling.

The hands free board carry made it much easier to negotiate the steep LA track with camera gear, flippers, etc.

(It was a DY kneelo thing- a plug in the boards nose to facilitate the sling and presto- you could ride your pushie with a 24” wide kneeboard)

PC came north to LA only occasionally…intending to photograph, but only when it got really good.

Because of that he rarely surfed but on those occasions when the waves were not quite as good as expected, we had that rare privilege of seeing him surf our wave.

His approach was much more high performance than the locals, still getting tubes but belting the lip too.

He seemed to be going 1/3 faster than everyone else!" - Simon Chipper
