North Shore Tube Ride, Hawaii 1970s

    $650.00

    North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii, 1970s

A powerful North Shore tube riding image from Peter Crawford’s 1970s archive.

This photograph holds a moment between old-style positioning and a more modern approach to tube riding — low, committed and moving with the speed of the wave rather than against it.

With the surfer and exact break still to be confirmed, the image remains a strong study of line, timing and Hawaiian water during one of surfing’s most influential decades.

A major figure in Australian surfing, Fitzgerald brought speed, precision and unmistakable style into the competitive arena.

This image places him inside one of the defining contest settings of the era — Burleigh, Stubbies and the growing theatre of professional surfing.

Associated with Stubbies, Rip Curl and HB, the photograph captures a key moment in the late-seventies Australian surf scene.

  • Buttons, Off The Wall 1975

    Buttons, Off The Wall 1975

    $650.00

Off The Wall, North Shore, Hawaii, 1975

Montgomery Ernest “Buttons” Kaluhiokalani surfing Off The Wall on the North Shore during one of the most electric periods in Hawaiian surfing.

Known simply as Buttons, he brought a kind of freedom and invention into surfing that felt completely his own — fast, loose, playful and radical. His surfing helped open up a new language of movement, especially in freesurfing, where style, risk and instinct could lead the way.

Photographed by Peter Crawford, this image captures Buttons riding without a leash, wearing Da Huey shorts and surfing an Ipa board from the early stinger era — a short-lived but influential design moment between the single-fin years and the rise of the twin fin.

A wild and beautiful archival image of one of surfing’s great natural talents.

  • Michael Peterson, Sunset Beach 1975

    Michael Peterson, Sunset Beach 1975

    $650.00

Sunset Beach, North Shore, Hawaii, 1975

Michael Peterson photographed from the water by Peter Crawford at Sunset Beach in 1975.

A defining Australian surfer in Hawaiian water, Peterson brought his own sharp, coiled style to one of the North Shore’s most powerful waves. This image holds the feeling of that period — raw ocean, heavy water and the quiet intensity of a surfer completely in rhythm with the line ahead.

A rare archival photograph from the golden era of seventies surfing.

  • Rabbit Bartholomew, Stubbies 1978

    Rabbit Bartholomew, Stubbies 1978

    $650.00

    Burleigh Point, Queensland, 1978

Rabbit Bartholomew on a roll at Burleigh, winning the Stubbies Surf Classic in the same year he claimed his first world title.

The Stubbies was more than a surf contest. It helped reshape professional surfing, bringing the man-on-man format into the spotlight and turning Burleigh into a natural arena for a new kind of competitive drama.

Captured from the water by Peter Crawford on Kodachrome 64 film using a Nikonos underwater camera, this close-up holds the speed, pressure and theatre of the moment.

Rabbit is pictured during the era of Stubbies shorts, Quiksilver, single fins and the emerging professionalism of Australian surfing.

  • Angourie Point, Yamba 1976

    Angourie Point, Yamba 1976

    $650.00

    Angourie Point, 1976

Angourie Point, New South Wales, 1976

Angourie was the centre of Country Soul in the seventies — a place where surfing, board design and coastal life all seemed to move together.

Captured by Peter Crawford in 1976, this photograph holds the feeling of the era: clean lines, open water and the raw beauty of the North Coast before it became widely known.

The board is associated with Wilderness Surfboards, shaped by Wayne Williams, linking the image back to the local surfboard culture that helped define Angourie’s place in Australian surfing history.

    Easter 1980

Mark Richards and Wayne Bartholomew, dusk, post-event 1980. No disrespect to Cheyne Horan or Shaun Tomson, but for a traditional Victorian crowd at Easter, it was all about flannelettes and piss, M.R. and Bugs. Here, M.R. assumes the apologetic politeness of a Clark Kent in victory, while Bugs assumes Churchillian staunchness in defeat.

Larry Blair and and Buzzy Kerbox prepare with a sense of urgency shortly after arriving at the airlifted 1979 2SM Coke Surfabout. No time to waste. With Bells pumping, the big gamble has paid off.

    Derek Hynd 2026

The 1979 2SM Coke Surfabout was notable as the first airlifted surf event in history. When Sydney's northern beaches remained flat for eight days, contest director Paul Holmes organised the unprecedented transport of the final 16 surfers, officials, and TV crew via six light aircraft to Bells Beach in Victoria to compete in 8-10 foot waves. Photographer Peter Crawford travelled with the surfers. The airlift from Narrabeen to Bells was a massive logistical feat, undertaken at great cost to sponsors Coca-Cola and radio station 2SM, to ensure the show went on. Cheyne Horan defeated Larry Blair and Simon Anderson to claim the title in dramatic, big waves. The event was the richest in professional surfing at the time and won a Gold Logie for 'Best Sports Event' on its television broadcast. Surfabout pioneered the "man-on-man" elimination format, adding intense excitement for spectators and viewers.
